Sketching and Colored Pencils

Another day of drawing in Quinhagak.  30 youth artists attended today. First we worked on our sketching projects.  Working off of black and white photos of the artifacts from Nunalleq, we practiced our pencil drawings.  Part of our assignment on this project is to find the Yup'ik names for these objects.  Darryl Small Jr. drew one of the dolls and asked our Yup'ik language specialist, Pauline Matthew, what it was in Yup'ik... irniaruaqi inuguaq.

Next we moved on to learning how to use colored pencils.  Again we had to make these practice boxes, this time using different techniques like stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, back and forth, and scumbling (LOL).
