The 6th grade teacher Heather Vogwill came and visited us today. She brought her new puppy, who is so cute, and we got to show her how we make 3D digital models.

3D model masters!

The group was working away on their different 3D model projects.  Some were still working on their photogrammetry models and others making their own creations.

Gearing up for our last art show

We are getting ready for our last art show.  A few of our students have finished their photogrammetry models and have been creating their own models in Meshmixer.

Other young artists are working on their projects.  We want to spread the word that this is our last art show and that everyone in welcome to come and see our work and to celebrate with us by sharing food at our potluck.

Processing and Editing

About half of us today were working on editing their models and the other half was working on building them.  We have all learned that patiences is a virtue in digital model building.  There are times when we have to wait on processing models, but it gives our young artists a chance to help out their fellow artists with building their models.  Cooperation :)

Jonelle cleaned her model and it is looking good...

Tundra Drums!

Hey check it out!  We were in the regional newspaper the Tundra Drums.  Good job Quinhagak youth!  Looking good.

Making models

We are working on the two different softwares, 123D Catch and PhotoScan Pro.  We have gotten much better with our picture taking and therefore have had some successful models built.  They do need some cleaning, but we are getting there.  Meghan Cleveland's model was built with PhotoScan and Tenaya's Model was built with 123D Catch.

3D Software

We have now been introduced to two ways to construct 3D digital models from photos.  First we used a software called AgiSoft PhotoScan.  Thankfully right now the company is offering a 30 day free trial of their PhotoScan Pro software, which we were able to use and practice constructing basic models.

The second way we started to learn was by using the Autodesk 123D Catch app.  This is a free app available for iPads, iPhones, Android, and Windows.  Its pretty cool because it helps you to figure out what angle to take the photos from.  Once you take the photos on your device you upload them to their servers and the model is constructed.

3D digital modelling

Our intrepid young artists of Quinhagak have embarked on their journey to learn how to make 3D digital models through photogrammetry and computer vision.  The first thing we had to learn was how to take pictures.  Many of the young artists were in the photography workshops, but this time we have to think a little different about the pictures we take.  We selected the object we wanted to make a model of, then took pictures all around it from different angles so the software can match the points and build the model.

Quinhagak Youth Film Festival

We are proud to present the entries for the Quinhagak Youth Film Festival.  Turn out was good, with elders and youth in attendance.  We turned out workspace into a theater for the showing.

More Editing

The crews were again working on editing their interviews.  We worked on making the title sequence long enough, question panels long enough so viewers could read them, putting our questions in order to tell a story, and putting in our ending credits.  We are so proud of our little editors, they are putting a lot of hard work.

Preparing for the Film Festival

We are excited to announce that our art show for the film section of our project is going to be in the form of a film festival.  We are inviting the whole community to come to the Red Building and watch our films, all of which star community members of Quinhagak.

Perfecting Editing Skills

A few of the crews today were still out filming, but others were back in the Red Building editing away.  Every film should have a title sequence, introduction panels, transitions, and ending credits.  Two crews are half way done with their projects.  So proud.

Sorry for the Delay

It has been a few days since the last post, Easter weekend was busy here in Quinhagak.  Our young artists have been filming away and learning how to edit their films.  The software that we are learning to use is iMovie.  It came preloaded on our laptops from the school and it is a pretty user friendly piece of software.

A few more practice interviews and just plain fun filming took place during the workshops...

Then the cameras when home over the weekend with our young filmmakers to interview more Elders and community members.  Our young artists will be editing their films, sneak peeks coming soon...

Interviewing

As we were waiting for some of our young filmmakers to arrive, we started with a warm up of pass the emotion.  Some of which were caught on camera this time.

Dion Pleasant portraying happy

Jawna Williams portraying mad

Since many of our young filmmakers have chosen to do interviews for their projects, next we practiced interviewing each other.  Everyone had a chance to interview and be interviewed.  This practice helped us to think about the background of our films... like are there other people in the shot, background noise, and how we should set up the camera.  Everyone was pretty nervous to be the one interviewed, but it was a good reminder that the people we would be interviewing would be nervous too (even some of the elders).

The practice interviews, though scary at first, really got us excited and we started to call elders and family members to interview right away. The first interview took place at the end of the workshop today.  Finally cameras were assigned to crew members who are responsible for them, then off our young filmmakers went into the community, filming the people of Quinhagak.

Yellow Crew is first to interview... Kaitlyn Henry, Marita Tunutmoak, and Darryl Small Jr. interviewing Pauline Johnson.

Filming Away

Once again our day started with theater warmups.  Today we did pass the emotion, where one person selects an emotion to act out then passes it around the circle... if anyone laughs when they aren't supposed to, then they are out.  At first some of us had a hard time trying to make realistic faces for each emotion, but as we went on each young filmmaker got better.

After playing pass the emotion, we did popcorn.  Each person jumps up and claps at different times, making the final outcome look like they are popcorn.  Good exercise to get some of that energy out.

Following our warm-ups and snack, we formed groups for our projects.  Each group discussed what they want to do in their project to answer the question "What does it mean to be Yup'ik?"  Each group chose what form their film was going to take... a play, interviews, etc., who their audience was going to be (old, young, yupiit, kass'aqs), and started to make storyboards to plan out their scenes.

At the very end of the workshop today, we got to use the cameras again, experimenting with how to film.  Some of the videos were quite silly and some are possible parts of projects.

Video Workshops Have Begun

We had our first day of video workshops and boy were we excited!  We had 14 young filmmakers ready to get started.  First off we covered the rules of the group as there were a few new faces, then on to what our projects are going to be about.  The group is going to be creating a YouTube Channel called Yup'ikTube.  This channel will display the films created by the young filmmakers in Quinhagak.  For our introduction to the world, the projects will be focused on discussing, "what it means to be Yup'ik".

After discussing our projects a little, we did some theatrical warm up exercises, as not only are the filmmakers going to be behind the camera, some may be in front of it as well.  Several of the young filmmakers were less than excited to participate in our little activities (2 Truths and 1 Lie and The Machine).  Hopefully tomorrow we can get the whole group going.

To finish up our day, the cameras came out and we started to take video...

Some of our photographers had finished projects to show, some had works-in-progress.  We are so proud of all the hard work our young photographers have put into their pieces.
